Nellie Council is a retired North Carolina educator who believes that teaching one’s grandchildren doesn’t require degrees or diplomas. The Newport News, Virginia native attended school in Hampton and Newport News. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education at Elizabeth City State Teachers’ College. Her teaching career began in Columbia, South Carolina in 1951, then transitioned to Martin County in 1953. In 1956, she married her husband Willie, a farmer. They have been married and living in Martin County for 57 years. They have two children—Beverly and Wilson— and one grandchild, Drew.
