My Champion’s Eyes

This story tells of a young man (blind) whose mother (legally blind) was willing to make every sacrifice to ensure her son’s independence and ultimate success. Mom encouraged him to do his best, give it his all, and beat the odds. In spite of the struggles, obstacles, challenges, and disability, he made it! Following the conclusion of this book, my desire is that you be encouraged and know that “you can” reach for the stars because the sky has no limit.

Verdina Gillette-Simms grew up in La Grange, North Carolina. At the age of 18, she was diagnosed with glaucoma. In spite of her visual challenges, God gave her the ability to actively participate in sports and enjoy a successful career as an Executive Assistant. Verdina graduated from North Lenoir High School and studied at Mount Olive College in the field of Secretarial Science. Verdina is the proud mother of Elexis, a two-time Paralympic Silver Medalist and is married to Rev. Rickey Simms, the love of her life.
